The theme of this year is Invest in our Planet. There were 30 participants in the competitions from B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture. About 50 students of Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Faculty members encourage the participants.
The brief introduction about celebration of Earth Day was presented by Dr. Khushboo Chandra. World Earth Day is celebrated to pledge to protect the planet from pollution and deforestation. There were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment; however, in spring 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the agenda. The objective is to popularize the knowledge on natural farming and resource conservation. Natural farming, also referred to as “the Fukuoka Method”, “the natural way of farming” or “do-nothing farming”, is an ecological farming approach established by Masanobu Fukuoka (1913–2008). Natural farming is a system where the laws of nature are applied to agricultural practices and no synthetic inputs are used. Natural farming is related to fertility farming, organic farming, sustainable agriculture, agro-ecology, agro-forestry, eco-agriculture and permaculture. The system works along with the natural biodiversity of each farmed area, encouraging the complexity of living organisms both plant and animal that shape their ecosystem.
Students expresses theme Invest in our Planet by making posters with a message of Green Earth, Healthy Future & Save our Mother Earth. The topics like Challenges for small scale farmers in Indian Agriculture, Constraint of Deforestation in Biodiversity, Livestock – Impact on Indian Economy, Agricultural Marketing, and Impact of excessive synthetic fertilizers on soil health and Hydroponics were discussed during extempore session. Dr. Heena presented vote of thanks.
